An officer-involved shooting early Saturday in Athens that injured a man will be investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Athens-Clarke County police asked the GBI to investigate.

Athens officer David Kelley shot a man when he reached for a firearm, according to a GBI news release. The man then fled, and later was apprehended by another ACC officer.

Kelley was on routine patrol when he stopped at a Golden Pantry store on Barnett Shoals Road. There, he encountered two men pouring liquor into a cup, the GBI said. The officer also saw that one of the men, Justin Tramell Scott, 22, had a firearm. Kelley gave multiple commands to Scott when he reached for his firearm. At that time, the officer fired shots, striking Scott.

After he was apprehended, Scott was taken to a hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury.

No officers were injured. The GBI will turn over its investigation to the Athens-Clarke County district attorney for any action it deems appropriate.
