A suspected burglar was shot by Clayton County police Thursday as he drove a getaway car toward an officer, the GBI said late Friday morning.

Police were called to a house on Katherine Village Drive near Ellenwood about 12:30 p.m. Thursday, and when they arrived, they found two burglary suspects and tried to arrest them, Clayton County police spokesman Hal Weiner said.

One of the suspects, 26-year-old Domenic Callaway, got into a vehicle and “drove toward one of the responding officers while attempting to flee,” said Scott Dutton, spokesman for the GBI, which is also investigating the incident.

The officer fired at Callaway, striking him in the wrist and torso, said Dutton, who added that a pistol was recovered from the Toyota Camry being driven by Callaway.

Callaway was being treated for gunshot wounds Friday at Atlanta Medical Center.

The second suspect, 25-year-old Antwan Hargett, was later caught in a nearby wooded area after being tracked by a K9.

Hargett was treated for minor injuries sustained in an encounter with the police dog, and released into police custody, according to Dutton.

Both suspects were charged with burglary and obstruction.

Police have not released the name of the officer who shot and wounded Callaway.
