Police and sheriff’s deputies were forced to open fire on and arrest a man who tried to run them over with his vehicle Tuesday during a traffic stop in north Forsyth County, the sheriff’s office said.

A team of two Forsyth sheriff’s deputies and one Georgia Probation officer opened fire on Vanus Nichols, 34, of Cumming, before they allegedly seized drugs and money from him.

“We shoot to stop a threat,” Forsyth sheriff’s Dep. Epifanio Rodriguez said.

The team arrested Nichols just before 10 p.m. at Jot Em Down and Gib Evans roads.

He was charged with aggravated assault on an officer and possession of methamphetamine, Rodriguez said.

Nichols, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was not injured by the officers’ shots, and there is no evidence he fired back, Rodriguez said.

Sheriff’s officials have not released the exact amount of cash and drugs confiscated, but they said it was a large amount of cash and a decent amount of meth.

The deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave while an investigation into the incident continues.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the case, Rodriguez said.

No other details were released.
