A former Georgia Superintendent of the Year was arrested Thursday on felony theft charges stemming from an investigation into an adult literacy program’s finances.
Robert Ronald Saunders was charged with felony theft by taking, Barrow County sheriff's Capt. Ryan Sears said. Saunders serves as the executive director of Adult Literacy Barrow, which offers GED programs and education opportunities through Lanier Technical College.
According to the sheriff’s office, Adult Literacy’s board of directors noticed suspicious financial activity Monday and immediately contacted the authorities.
Sears said the board of directors “cooperated fully” with the investigation.
The investigation is ongoing and no other details about the allegations against Saunders were available.
Saunders served as Barrow’s school superintendent from 1998 until he retired in May 2010. He was Georgia’s Superintendent of the Year in 2008.
