A Fayetteville police officer chasing a suspect on foot early Wednesday morning was struck and injured by a Fayette County sheriff’s patrol car that was pursuing the same man.
The officer, identified as Capt. Chad Myers, was treated for non-life threatening injuries at Piedmont Fayette Hospital and released, Fayetteville police Lt. Mike Whitlow said in an emailed statement.
A Fayette sheriff’s deputy stopped a 1997 Honda Accord at 3:41 a.m. for an inoperable headlight on Ga. 279 and Ga. 314, sheriff Barry Babb said in another emailed statement. As the deputy talked to him, the driver pulled away and headed south on Ga. 314 at a speed of up to 108 miles per hour, Babb said.
Fayetteville police joined the pursuit and the suspect eventually lost control, hit a curb and stopped at the intersection of North Glynn Street and North Jeff Davis Drive, Babb said. The driver then ran into the Fayetteville Corners Shopping Center as three passengers stayed inside the car.
As Myers ran after the suspect, a deputy trying to enter the shopping center struck him. The deputy, Babb said, stopped to help Myers.
Deputies finally captured Curtis Hall, 25, of Gay, Ga., at 5:30 a.m. He had an outstanding warrant for simple battery family violence out of Meriwether County. He was charged with felony fleeing and attempting to elude, improper equipment, obstruction of officer, possession of hydrocodone, reckless driving and driving on a suspended license.
Passengers Kalvin Hall, 25, of Gay, and Brandon Favors, 17, of Gay, were charged with obstruction of officer. Another passenger, Dontevious Ferrell, 25, of Gay, had an outstanding warrant for violation of probation from an original charge of driving under the influence out of Clayton County. He was charged with giving a false name and date of birth to an officer and obstruction of officer.
All three passengers were taken to Piedmont Fayette Hospital, evaluated and released, then taken to Fayette County Jail. Curtis Hall reported no injuries, Babb said. He was also taken to Fayette County Jail.
The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident.
