A man and his two adult sons were all sentenced to prison for their roles in a shooting that left a man seriously injured, the Cobb County district attorney said Friday.

Corey Leroy Hughes Sr., 45, Sheldon Corey Hughes, 23, and Corey Leroy Hughes Jr., 21, each pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated assault in the Aug. 27, 2014, shooting at the Lorene Lodge, Cobb DA Vic Reynolds’ office said.

That night, Hughes Sr. had gotten into a fight at the complex and later returned with his two sons, according to investigators. One man, whose name was not released, was shot seven times with a .380-caliber handgun, including three times in the neck. He survived the wounds and told the court he tried to run from his attacker.

“I looked up and I said, ‘Please don’t kill me,’” he said.

Hughes Sr. entered a non-negotiated plea late last month. Thursday afternoon, Cobb Superior Court Judge A. Gregory Poole sentenced him to serve 20 years in prison. He is not eligible for parole due to his four prior felony convictions. Hughes was released from state prison in February after his conviction for theft, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.

“Senior is the one most responsible, because it wouldn’t have happened if he hadn’t called his boys over and said, ‘Let’s get them,’” said John Pursley, an assistant district attorney. “Their father, the person who was supposed to give them some moral compass in life, is responsible for his sons’ going to prison.”

Hughes Jr., who previously pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated assault and a misdemeanor count of carrying a weapon without a license, was sentenced to 10 years, with three years to serve in prison, the DA said. Sheldon Hughes pleaded guilty last month and was sentenced to 20 years to serve in prison.
