A clerk at Fairburn United Methodist Church was beaten with a baseball bat during an attempted robbery at the church’s administrative offices Thursday morning, authorities said.

The 52-year-old clerk, who was not identified, had an infant with her when a 15- to 18-year-old male came to the office shortly after 9:30 a.m., according to a post on the Fairburn police department’s Facebook page.

The individual knocked on the door asking to the use the phone, and the clerk let him in. He went into an adjacent office to make a call. When he came out a few moments later, he struck her repeatedly, according to the post, demanding car keys.

He did not get the keys or anything else of value and fled on foot.

The infant was not hurt.

Police are asking that anyone with information about the case call 770-964-1441.
