A former DeKalb County police officer is banned from working in law enforcement for three years after he pleaded guilty Tuesday to buying cocaine while on duty, officials said.

Evan McWhite bought one gram of cocaine for his girlfriend Feb. 23, DeKalb district attorney spokesman Marcus Garner said. McWhite was charged with violation of oath of public office.

McWhite was also sentenced by a DeKalb Superior Court judge to 200 hours of community service, which involves working roadside trash detail, and a $500 fine, Garner said.

He must surrender his police certification, undergo substance-abuse evaluation and treatment, and submit to random drug screenings.
