With their children in the home, a man shot and killed his wife, wounded his mother-in-law and turned the gun on himself, DeKalb County police said Tuesday.

Police responded to a call about a shooting about 12:40 a.m. at a house on Wetherborn Place.

“On their arrival, they discovered two people deceased on scene suffering from gunshot wounds,” DeKalb police Lt. Mark Lavigne said. “All indications this is going to be a murder-suicide with a husband and wife.”

The couple was identified as 34-year-old Clifford Elston and 35-year-old Shayla Sullivan.

According to police, Elston got into an argument with Sullivan before he shot her and his mother-in-law. The couple’s children, ages 12 and 14, were in another room of the house at the time of the apparent murder-suicide, Lavigne said.

“They did not witness the incident,” he said. “They were not injured.”

The man’s mother-in-law was taken to a local hospital with an injury to her foot, Lavigne said. She was in stable condition Tuesday, and other family members were taking care of the children.

The shooting remains under investigation.
