A 2-year-old died after being hit by a car at a DeKalb County apartment complex, authorities said.

Just before 7:30 p.m. Monday, police received a call about a child being hit at the Austin Oaks Apartments off Glenwood Road, DeKalb police Sgt. J.D. Spencer told AJC.com. A vehicle leaving the apartment complex hit the child, who had wandered into the roadway while playing.

The driver remained at the scene, and it’s unclear whether charges will be filed. The child, who Spencer identified as Logan Lewis, later at a hospital.

On Tuesday night, a vigil was held for the child’s grieving family. Lashun Lewis, the toddler’s grandmother, told Channel 2 Action News the community has added several signs telling drivers to slow down.

“He was walking on the grass because we don’t have sidewalks,” she said. “(The toddler was) trying to get loose from his brother, and because (the driver) was going so fast, she hit him.”

Dozens of neighbors, family members and friends met to release balloons, light candles and pray after the incident, but Lewis said she wants the driver to know they aren’t angry with her.

“It was an accident,” Lewis told Channel 2. “I know she didn’t mean to hit him, and I don’t want her to think we're angry or anything. We're not — we’re just hurt.”
