A Cherokee County judge denied bond Monday to a Woodstock man accused of battery against his girlfriend’s newborn, who later died.

Nicholas Campbell, 26, was arrested Friday on charges of first-degree cruelty to children, aggravated assault, aggravated battery and possession of methamphetamine. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine the cause of death of Ciara Campbell, the 24-day-old child, Sheriff’s Office Lt. Jay Baker said.

Deputies responded to a home off Magnolia Springs Drive late Thursday after receiving a "child not breathing" call, Baker said. The infant was taken to Northside Hospital-Cherokee before being transferred to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, where she was taken off life support Sunday.

Multiple injuries were discovered on the child, Baker said, but specifics were not provided. Campbell was arrested after he, the child’s mother and the child’s grandmother were interviewed, Baker said.

Baker said Campbell was not the child’s biological father despite having the same surname.
