An Atlanta man who attempted to rob then fatally shot a man during a drug deal at a Hardee’s in Fairburn will spend the rest of his life in prison, officials said.

Quintavius Hawkins, 21, was convicted of murder and aggravated assault with intent to rob in the September 2015 shooting along Senoia Road, according to a release from the Fulton County District Attorney's Office.

He was sentenced to life in prison plus five years.

Hawkins shot Clayton Smith, 22, in what he calls an act of self-defense.

Hawkins and three other men went to the restaurant parking lot to buy marijuana from Smith, according to the release. Hawkins paid for a small amount of drugs, but wanted an entire ounce.

When Smith showed the ounce, Hawkins pulled a gun and tried to snatch the marijuana, according to the release. Smith pulled his own gun and shot Hawkins, who fatally shot Smith in the chest.

A witness was sitting in Smith’s front seat, but said she couldn’t identify Hawkins as the shooter.

Hawkins’ story changed multiple times when Fairburn police interviewed him, telling detectives someone shot Smith after arguing about a girl, according to the release. Hawkins later admitted to shooting Smith.

The other men involved in the case were charged with murder and armed robbery.
