Atlanta hospital: Severely beaten ‘John Doe’ patient identified

A man who was brought to Grady Memorial Hospital after he was found severely beaten and unconscious outside a DeKalb County motel nearly three weeks ago has been identified, the hospital said Tuesday.

In brief emailed statements, Grady spokeswoman Denise Simpson said she could not provide the man’s name or any other details.

Grady issued a news release Monday asking for the public's help identifying the 'John Doe' patient, who was found Sept. 3 at the Economy Inn at 2565 Wesley Chapel Road near Decatur. A DeKalb County police spokesman said records showed only an emergency medical call at that location on Sept. 3. He had no information about an alleged attack.

Whatever happened, the incident left the patient “unable to communicate because of a severe head injury,” Simpson previously said.

Grady said the man is black, about 5-foot-5 and 200 pounds, and probably around 30 years old. There’s a large mole on his upper left arm, and he has two tattoos: “MVP” on his lower left arm, “BSP” on his lower right.
