Athens police are investigating a brawl that broke out in a skating rink Saturday night, leaving at least three people with minor injuries.

The fighting occurred during a private party at the Fun Galaxy roller rink along Cherokee Road.

Cellphone video recorded by bystanders appears to show punches flying and hair being pulled as groups of women battle each other. It’s unclear what caused the fight, but witnesses said alcohol might have been a factor.

“They just kicked and stomped my head,” said one woman, who told Channel 2 Action News she was injured in the scuffle along with her sister and cousin. “I got hit with a bottle, I got hit with a cellphone ... It’s crazy because so many people were there recording it instead of breaking it up.”

The woman said there were security guards present, but alleges they didn’t do enough to control the crowds or break up the fights.

The owner of the rink told Channel 2 he rented out the entire facility Saturday night, and that the people who hosted the party hired their own security guards.

No arrests were made, but Athens police spokesman Geoffrey Gilland confirmed that detectives are investigating an aggravated assault at the rink while the department’s alcohol compliance officer investigates whether the facility was in compliance with state and local alcohol ordinances.
