Two armed robbers are accused of putting a tree branch in the middle of the Silver Comet Trail in Cobb County and waiting for bikers to stop so they could steal from them, police said.

On Jan. 18 around 5:45 p.m., the two robbers tricked a cyclist into stopping on the path, then ambushed him and robbed him at gunpoint, Cobb County police told Channel 2 Action News. The robbery took place west of Anderson Mill Road.

Officer Neil Penirelli told Channel 2 this is the first time he’s heard of an ambush-style attack like this along the trail. He said the trail is monitored by police.

“We have a ranger unit, and they’re out there as much as they can possibly be,” Penirelli said. “With 150 miles of trails, it’s impossible to cover everything all the time.”

The biker wasn’t hurt, but the robbers stole his cellphone, the news station reported.

Blue trail marker emergency phones have recently been installed to improve police response time, police said. The Silver Comet Trail runs from Cobb County to Anniston, Ala., and is more than 61 miles long.

After a woman was assaulted on the trail in 2014, Paulding County officials added 47 cameras at 21 locations, which deputies have access to at all times, Channel 2 reported.

Police didn’t release a description of the suspects. An investigation is ongoing.
