Investigators believe a tractor-trailer driver was drunk when he led several police agencies on a 90-mile chase that began in the Macon area and ended near Atlantic Station.

Late Monday, deputies in both Bibb and Monroe counties attempted to stop a tractor-trailer being driven erratically on I-75 northbound with no headlights, police said Tuesday. They said the driver attempted to hit other vehicles including patrol cars but did not stop.

Near mile marker 191, a Monroe County deputy pulled beside the truck and shot out several tires, but the driver didn’t stop, a spokeswoman for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said. In Henry County, police put out “stop sticks” in an attempt to disable the vehicle. And near mile marker 206, a deputy shot out the tractor-trailer’s front tire.

But the truck continued, driving on its wheel rims, according to police. Deputies discontinued the chase in a construction zone in Henry County. But the chase continued into Atlanta at a slower pace, according to police.

In Atlanta, the driver, Benard Mageto Monyoncho, 26, of Robbinsdale, M.N., was apprehended and taken to the Monroe County jail. Monyoncho was charged with aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, felony fleeing and attempting to elude, open container of alcohol violation, DUI, reckless driving, littering and not exercising due care when operating a motor vehicle, according to police.

No injuries were reported during the chase.
