An Alabama man was thrown from his pickup truck and killed early Monday during a rollover crash in Coweta County, authorities said.

Investigators believe a combination of driving under the influence of alcohol and not wearing a seat belt contributed to the man’s death.

State troopers responded to the single-vehicle crash on Ga. 16 shortly after 1:30 a.m., the Georgia State Patrol said in a statement. According to investigators, 26-year-old Johnathan Pethel of Anniston, Alabama, was traveling north in a Dodge Ram 1500 when he ran off the road near Ashley Woods Drive and overturned several times.

“The driver was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle,” the GSP said in a statement. “The reason the vehicle left the roadway is still under investigation.”

Pethel’s passenger, 24-year-old Christopher Powell of Newnan, was injured in the wreck, authorities said. An update on his condition wasn’t immediately available Thursday afternoon.
