A clerk shot in the chest Wednesday during a late-night attempted robbery of a smoke shop in Cherokee County has died.

The shooting happened just before midnight at the Smoke 911 store in the Shoppes of Woodstock on Ga. 92.

Woodstock police said two suspects entered the store at closing time, pulled out guns and shot the clerk.

The 20-year-old clerk was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, where he later died, Woodstock police Sgt. Randy Milligan told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“Our detectives are currently following up on some promising leads,” Woodstock police spokeswoman Brittany Duncan told Channel 2 Action News.

Detectives were not sure whether anything was taken.

Duncan said the suspects fled in a gray, four-door BMW with a dealer’s drive-out tag.

Such violent crimes are “extremely rare” for Woodstock, Milligan said. “Stranger-on-stranger crimes here inside the city of Woodstock are very rare.”

The GBI is assisting Woodstock police in the investigation.
