A moving company loading up items from a Paulding County home found something that couldn’t be packed up in a cardboard box: A cannonball dating back to the Civil War.

The fuse was still attached, and the movers decided to have deputies take a look at it, Cpl. Ashley Henson with the Paulding Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.

“When deputies arrived, they immediately thought that it looked authentic and reported what they found to their supervisor,” Henson told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The GBI bomb squad was called in, and about 6 p.m. Wednesday, the cannonball was detonated in a former shooting range behind the Seven Hills community, Henson said. Area residents reported hearing house-shaking booms at the time.

Investigators hadn’t determined Thursday whether the cannonball contained a live round or a “dummy” round, Henson said.
