Residents of an Atlantic Station high-rise forced from their homes overnight by a carbon monoxide scare have been allowed to return to their units.
No injuries were reported in the incident, which began around 11:30 p.m. Thursday at The Atlantic, a 47-story apartment building on 17th Street.
Firefighters first cleared the lobby and a public area on the fifth floor to give residents a place to go, then went floor to floor telling them to leave their apartments until the entire building could be checked.
“We cleared that with a monitor to make sure it was clear,” Atlanta fire Assistant Chief Steven Woodworth told Channel 2 Action News. “Once we were sure of that, we moved the people to the fifth floor. We didn’t want to put them out in this weather.”
Atlanta fire spokeswoman Janet Ward said about 250 people from 20 affected floors were moved to the safe area, where they were offered medical screenings.
Woodworth said the source of the elevated carbon monoxide levels was found, but didn’t elaborate.
The all-clear was sounded and residents were allowed to return to their apartments around 4:30 a.m. Friday, according to Ward.
