Two brothers are accused of scamming elderly Atlantans out of thousands of dollars by claiming to do roofing repairs, Atlanta police said Monday. Investigators believe there could be additional victims.

In one case, an 89-year-old Morningside resident gave the two men $40,000 for repairs, Officer Kim Jones said. Then, the two men repeatedly asked for additional money.

“The investigation revealed that, had the ‘repairs’ been done properly, they would have amounted to roughly $1,500.00 worth of work and materials,” Jones said in an emailed statement. “However, the ‘roofers’ did more damage than they repaired.”

During the investigation, detectives located other suspected victims in the Druid Hills and Emory University areas, Jones said. An 85-year-old man told police he paid the two men $72,000 before he suspected a scam and declined further payments, according to police. The suspects then allegedly threatened to “rip the work down,” Jones said.

On Nov. 21, police arrested Keith Derrick Ogles, 50, of Jonesboro, and Jeffery Glenn Ogles, 51, of Griffin, and charged each with financial exploitation of the elderly, according to police. The brothers, who were at the Druid Hills home of another suspected victim, were booked into the DeKalb County jail. The Ogles were being held Monday afternoon on $50,000 bond each, records showed.

Anyone who has had similar dealings with the Ogles and feels like they may be a victim should contact the Atlanta police Major Fraud Unit at 404-546-4240.
