The body of a female swimmer who went missing off the coast of Tybee Island on Sunday night has been identified.
The victim was Ashley Scicere, 18, of Covington, WSAV reported, citing the Chatham County coroner.
An autopsy report from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation revealed the cause of death as accidental drowning. Foul play is not suspected, WSAV reported.
Tybee officials said Scicere was reported missing about 8 p.m. Sunday. Two others who were swimming with her were rescued by a Tybee Island firefighter and a local resident who was kiteboarding nearby, according to WSAV.
Tybee City Manager Shawn Gillen told WSAV the group was about 100 yards from the shore. A report by the National Weather Service said a “likely” rip current played a factor.
Rescue crews worked through the night to locate Scicere, according to news outlets.
Tybee Island Mayor Shirley Sessions told the Savannah Morning News that Scicere’s body was recovered Monday morning.
On Sunday night, three people were swimming just south of the pier in rough conditions, according to reporter Emma Hamilton of WJCL.
The Tybee Island Fire Department and the Coast Guard Air Station in Savannah responded to the scene, according to media outlets. Chatham County provided helicopter support, WSAV reported, citing Gillen.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
