It’s not known why two South Cobb High School students were leaving school around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday.
But when they attempted to walk across Austell Road, one of the two was struck by a car, according to Sgt. Dana Pierce with Cobb County police.
The 16-year-old boy, whose name was not released, was with another student when he was hit by a red Dodge Neon, according to police and witnesses. There is no crosswalk in the area on Austell Road, a four-lane highway with a median.
The injured boy was taken first to WellStar Cobb Hospital and then WellStar Kennestone Hospital, Pierce said. The boy was in critical condition, Channel 2 Action News reported Tuesday afternoon.
The Cobb County school system declined to comment on the incident and referred questions to police.
“We are aware of a traffic incident from earlier today,” a school spokeswoman said. “Cobb County police are investigating. Please refer questions to them.”
The Dodge driver, who was not injured, stopped at the scene of the wreck, according to police.
