A man is in the hospital Monday after Gwinnett County fire crews rescued him from a burning home near Lilburn.

Firefighters were sent to the residence in the 4000 block of Sheila Court just before 10:30 a.m., according to Gwinnett fire spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge.

A neighbor called and reported that smoke was coming from the home, officials said.

Officials confirmed someone was trapped inside the house.

First responders initially went through the front door with hand tools and a thermal imaging camera, but they couldn’t find anyone, according to fire spokesman Donald Strother.

When they went in through the garage and down a stairwell to the basement, firefighters found an unconscious man, Strother said.

Strother told Channel 2 Action News from the scene that the man was in cardiac arrest when he was found. Three firefighters carried him out of the burning home.

“Crews put forth a significant amount of effort to make sure they were able to save him because while there was active fire going on around, some of the strategies had to change,” Strother said. “It was no longer about saving property but about saving a life.”

Once the man was out of the house, paramedics revived him and took him to the hospital.

Officials were not able to provide any other details on the man’s injuries.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
