Authorities have identified the pilot killed Monday afternoon when a small plane crashed into a wooded area near Newborn.

Just one person was aboard the Cessna 172 when it went down about 2:15 p.m., Jasper County sheriff’s Capt. Billy Bryant said Tuesday. Authorities were called to the scene by nearby residents who witnessed the fatal crash in the otherwise quiet area.

The pilot was identified Tuesday as 72-year-old Millwood Ashley Dekle of Toccoa. Investigators believe Dekle was flying from Toccoa to Cairo when the plane crashed, Bryant said.

Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board returned to the crash site Tuesday morning and removed the plane from the woods. The NTSB is looking into what caused the crash, but it is expected to take about 18 months before that investigation is complete.

While Newborn is in Newton County, the crash took place across the Jasper-Newton county line, authorities said.
