A woman was killed Friday morning when her SUV slammed into the back of a stopped tractor-trailer on I-285 in DeKalb County.
She first hit an unknown object in the southbound lanes before colliding with the tractor-trailer near the Glenwood Road exit, according to DeKalb County police. The big rig was stopped at the time.
The woman, who was identified by the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s office as 22-year-old Elan Carrey of Stone Mountain, was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center, a total of eight vehicles were involved in the resulting pileup. Authorities shut down multiple lanes around 4:15 a.m. to clear the wreckage, causing a "big, bad backup" on the inner loop through DeKalb County, WSB traffic reporter Mark Arum said.
The interstate remained jammed until the lanes reopened around 7:30 a.m. At the height of the delays, tough backups stretched to U.S. 78, according to the Traffic Center.
The crash remains under investigation, DeKalb police spokesman Sgt. J.D. Spencer told AJC.com.
