Over 38 people from eight families were displaced by a fire that broke out at an Atlanta apartment complex.

More than three dozen people were displaced after a weekend fire damaged multiple units at a southwest Atlanta apartment complex.

The fire broke out Saturday at the Abby Ridge apartments on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, according to officials.

Volunteers with the Red Cross responded to the scene, and workers from the organization’s disaster division provided emergency assistance for 38 people from eight families.

“Along with emotional support, Red Cross volunteers provided assistance for immediate emergency needs such as lodging, food, clothing, toiletries, stuffed animals for the kids, replacement medications and other essentials,” Red Cross spokesman Mpho Mono said.

The extent of the damage to the apartment units is unclear. Atlanta Fire Rescue spokesman Anaré Holmes told AJC.com the blaze was deemed accidental.

Mono said caseworkers will continue to follow up with families in coming days to “share recovery resources and help them get back on their feet.”
