A 58-year-old Canton man was killed in a head-on collision that closed a Cherokee County intersection for several hours Monday, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Investigators believe a Ford Fiesta and a Ford DRW Super Duty Comcast truck were both eastbound on Ga. 140, east of Canton, at the same time a Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling westbound. The Ford Fiesta was stopped to turn left onto Avery Road just before 12:30 p.m., a GSP spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

“For unknown reasons, the Comcast truck steered to the left to avoid hitting the Ford and traveled into the westbound lanes striking the Chevy pickup head-on,” the GSP said.

Dwight C. Kelley, the pickup driver, died at the scene of the wreck, which closed the intersection of Ga. 140 and Avery Road. Traffic was temporarily diverted from the area during the investigation, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver of the Comcast truck, Anthony S. Conner, 39, from Waleska was injured and transported to Northside Hospital-Cherokee for treatment. The passenger in the Fiesta, Eileen P. Cook, 66, of Canton was also injured and taken to Northside-Cherokee, according to investigators. The Fiesta’s driver, Tiffany M. Beasley, 17, of Canton was not injured.

The crash remained under investigation late Monday.
