The pilot who was flying a U.S. Air Force F-15C jet that crashed in the North Sea off the British coast Monday morning  has been found dead.

The pilot will not be identified, according to the 48th Fighter Wing.

“This is a tragic loss for the 48th Fighter Wing community, and our deepest condolences go out to the pilot's family and the 493rd Fighter Squadron,” according to a statement from the 48th Fighter Wing.

The single-seater jet was a part of a four-jet formation drill, according to BBC correspondent Jonathan Beale. A search and rescue team is scouring the area for the pilot, who was based at the RAF Lakenheath, Suffolk. The F-15C Eagle crashed about 9:40 a.m. BST. The aircraft was a part of the 48th Fighter Wing, according to a statement from the U.S. Air Force.

The cause of the crash is unknown.
