A driver who allegedly struck and killed two high school cross country runners in Oklahoma was charged Friday with two counts of manslaughter, according to The Associated Press.

Max Leroy Townsend allegedly struck a group of runners with his pickup truck outside Moore High School on Monday night in Oklahoma, according to the Moore Police Department.

Townsend initially was charged with first-degree manslaughter and six counts of leaving the scene of an injury accident, according to TV station KFOR.

Townsend reportedly lost his son in a hit-and-run accident less than 24 hours before the incident, according to KFOR.

Townsend reportedly hit several vehicles before and after allegedly striking the students, who were on a training run, according to KOCO 5.

As many as six children reportedly were hit by the pickup truck. One student was flown to a hospital, according to reports.

Police reportedly conducted a sobriety test on Townsend, according to the Fox affiliate in Oklahoma City.

A silver car reportedly chased the pickup truck, a witness told the Oklahoma Fox station.
