UPDATE: Ex-firefighter reportedly rescues 1 from canal in Savannah

One person has been rescued by a former Savannah firefighter after the driver’s vehicle reportedly went into a canal Thursday in Savannah, according to IAFF574 Savannah and news outlet WTGS.

The former Savannah firefighter, who is now with the military, rescued the driver, news outlet WTGS reported.
The former firefighter, who happened to be driving by, jumped in the water, broke the glass and held the person's head above water until EMS arrived, WTGS reported, citing officials.

The incident happened about 8:54 a.m. in the 2100 block of Dean Forest Road, according to WTGS.
Witnesses said the driver lost control and veered into a canal, WTGS reported.
The driver was given a flotation device and pulled to shore, according to WTGS.
At least two people initially were reported in the water, according to IAFF574 Savannah, but the former firefighter was one of the people in the canal.
Engine 13, Truck 13, Rescue 1, Rescue 2, Engine 3, Engine 14, battalion chief 3, chief 3 and Safety all were reportedly on the scene, and dive team personnel were in the water.
