A driver charged with hitting a high school student who had gotten off a school bus in Douglas County Monday afternoon is in jail on bond of $14,000, the Douglas County sheriff’s office told Channel 2 Action News.

Yung Lam, 46, of Maspeth, N.Y., is accused of hitting New Manchester High School student Destiny Wilson, 17, of Douglasville, at about 4:30 p.m., the Georgia State Patrol said.

Lam’s 2002 Acura was northbound on Bomar Rd., said spokesperson Franka Young, when it tried to pass the bus, which was unloading students at the intersection with Springside Court. The car did so in a no passing zone while the students were crossing the road. The school bus was stopped with its stop sign arm extended when Lam passed the bus, investigators said.

Wilson was hit with the front quarter panel and tire area of the car. A Douglas County Schools spokesperson said Wilson was checked by paramedics called to the scene, then taken to the hospital. Her injuries were not life-threatening.

Witnesses told investigators the car stopped briefly after hitting Wilson, then left the scene.

Lam is charged with reckless driving, failure to stop for school bus loading or unloading, passing in a no passing zone, driver to exercise due care, and hit and run/leaving scene of an accident.
