The Madison County Sheriff’s Office has ordered an autopsy for a 1-month-old infant who apparently died from suffocation while sleeping in a bed with a parent, the Athens Banner-Herald reported.

Medics and police were called to Country Living Mobile Home Park near Colbert on Aug. 17 about the incident, Madison County Sheriff’s Capt. Jimmy Patton told the Athens Banner-Herald.

Upon arrival, medics attempted CPR on the infant, who was unresponsive, according to the Athens Banner-Herald.

The infant was reportedly smothered while sleeping in bed with a parent, the Athens Banner-Herald reported. And, as is the case with all infant deaths, according to Patton, an autopsy was ordered.

About 3,500 babies die each year in the U.S. from sleep-related incidents, according to a news release from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2018.

“Unfortunately, too many babies in this country are lost to sleep-related deaths that might be prevented,” the CDC said in the release.
