No joke, Friday is suppose to be “partly sunny” despite a wet cold front overnight with a low of 26 degrees, possibly as precursor to a weekend in the 60s, according to the National Weather Service.

Still, the high Friday is expected to be only 48 degrees, Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said.

“The weekend is looking good,” he said.

The weather service issued a winter weather advisory that “patchy black ice” was likely across north and much of central Georgia on Thursday night. It warned drivers to exercise extra caution while driving through Friday morning, especially north of the Columbus-to-Macon-to-Warrenton line.

“As a very cold air mass continues to spread over the state this evening and overnight, temperatures will fall below freezing,” the weather service said. “This coupled with wet grounds from widespread rains will result in patches of black ice, resulting in slick spots on area roads and bridges.”

The threat of icy conditions prompted school officials to cancel classes Thursday in Catoosa, Dade, Walker and Whitfield counties. Students were released early Thursday from classes in Gordon, Gilmer and Murray counties, along with Calhoun city schools.

Chattooga County Schools will be delayed by two hours Friday because of the weather.
