The website set up to allow some residents of Cobb and Douglas County to get a COVID-19 vaccine crashed Monday morning and remained inaccessible as of 4:30 p.m. according to local officials.

The Cobb & Douglas Public Health Department said their site crashed “due to an overwhelming response.” The website is where public safety personnel and people over the age of 65 must register in order to receive the vaccine.

“We are currently working on the issue and will have it resolved as soon as possible,” department spokeswoman Valerie Crow said.

Monday was the first day the health department began offering the online appointment system for public safety personnel and people age 65 and older who fall into the Phase 1A+ group. On Thursday, the department started vaccinating frontline healthcare workers at Jim Miller Park in Marietta.

Appointments can be made using the system on the department’s website created solely for people who are allowed to get the vaccine at this time, the department said. Today, Cobb & Douglas Public health will start vaccinating this group of people.

An email will be sent to those residents from the local health department on how they can register after they enroll. Each participant will be asked to provide proof of healthcare personnel status. The health department will prioritize Cobb and Douglas county residents, it said.

Federal data show Georgia has the second-lowest vaccination rate of any state in the nation; only Mississippi has a lower rate, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported. Gov. Brian Kemp said Friday there’s been a significant delay by some officials in reporting vaccinations while acknowledging problems communicating information about where people can get the vaccine.
