Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Lisa Herring has tested positive for COVID-19.

The district announced her diagnosis in a Twitter post Friday evening.

Herring is in quarantine, the district said. She is following guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and “taking all necessary precautionary measures for a full recovery,” APS said in the statement.

Herring, 48, became superintendent in July.

APS has remained in a virtual-only instructional model since mid-March, when school buildings first closed.

The district had planned to resume in-person instruction last month for special education students and those in prekindergarten through fifth grade who chose that option. But, a few weeks before the proposed start-date, the district announced that it would postpone the reopening plan until January.

Herring cited increased local coronavirus case numbers as the reason for the delay.
