A person “regularly at” Bunche Middle School has tested positive for tuberculosis, prompting testing of students and staff, the Fulton County health department said Wednesday.
Fulton Health Services was notified about the suspected case the week of Feb. 23, but preliminary tests for active TB were negative. Tests confirmed the case Friday, and parents were notified by a letter Tuesday, Fulton Health Services said.
On Thursday, school and health officials will hold an information session, which is limited to parents, students and staff of the school, located on Perry Boulevard in northwest Atlanta. The free testing is set for Tuesday, and those results will be reported two days later to those who were tested.
Tuberculosis, or TB, is caused by a bacterium that typically attacks the lungs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. TB is spread through the air, but not through general contact with others, such as shaking hands, sharing food or drinks, or kissing, according to the CDC.
