Arrest made of man accused of trying to run over Fulton officer

A south Fulton County man faces multiple charges the day after he is suspected of trying to elude a Fulton police officer by running over her in a car.

Marcus Moment, 20, was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, theft by receiving a stolen vehicle and driving on a suspended license after his arrest Wednesday afternoon in Clayton County by US Marshals Metro Fugitive Task Force, said Fulton Police det. Melissa Parker.

Police suspect Moment was driving the white Ford Mustang they believe was involved in an armed robbery and carjacking before being used to try to run over a police officer in south Fulton around noon Tuesday.

The car was recovered from the Chattahoochee River around 10 p.m. Tuesday, just off Highway 41 and south of I-285 past Cumberland Mall in Cobb County.

Cobb police located the car and notified Fulton County after recognizing it was the one being sought by police there, Parker said.

Earlier Tuesday a Fulton police officer had responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle on Butner Road behind the Berean Bible Baptist Church and was checking the Mustang when a man approached her. As they talked, the man ran and the officer chased him on foot, Det. Parker said.

The man doubled back to the car, jumped in and accelerated toward the officer, attempting to run her over. The officer fired shots at the vehicle as it approached. She got out of the way, and was not hurt, but the driver drove off.

“I was in the middle of my session and heard the car rev,” Berean Pastor Rogers Skepple told Channel 2 Action News. “(I) heard a couple of backfires.”

Skepple said what he thought were a couple of backfires were actually gunshots.

Police said the vehicle may have been carjacked Monday from College Park and also involved in an armed robbery.

Parker said the charges might be upgraded depending on the disposition of cases from other jurisdictions.
