Andrew Young was still “a little sore, but OK” Tuesday afternoon in the wake of an unusual traffic accident in which he was injured.

The former mayor of Atlanta and ambassador to the United Nations was resting and taking medication for the pain that resulted from bumps and bruises he suffered Monday when a car he was riding in was hit by a cement truck in Atlanta, said his spokeswoman Kelley Jackson.

“I think everybody’s more shaken up than he is,” Jackson said. Messages of support for Young have been pouring in, she added, and “the well wishes and phone calls are much appreciated.”

Young was treated at the side of the road by emergency personnel after the crash, then taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure, she added.

Atlanta police released their incident report of the collision which occurred at Hemphill Avenue and 14th Street just after 5 p.m.

According to the report, which cited the statements of the people involved in the accident, the cement truck was westbound on 14th St. crossing the intersection at Hemphill when the traffic light began to change. A vehicle headed northbound on Hemphill began to enter the intersection at 14th St. at that time. The truck driver tried to avoid a collision by swerving out of the way, but its top-heavy weight caused it to turn over on top of the vehicle.

The car Young was a passenger in was stopped at the light at the intersection and it was hit by the truck, the report stated.

The cement truck driver was cited for disobeying a traffic control device and driving too fast for conditions, Atlanta police Sgt. Greg Lyon said.
