Alpharetta city officials are considering instituting metered parking downtown to aid city merchants.
At Monday night’s Alpharetta City Council meeting, the consultant on the downtown City Center project presented the recommendation for about 60 metered spots on Main Street and Milton Avenue. The study was done after merchants complained that downtown workers were parking directly in front of their stores all day long, driving potential customers away
If metering was adopted, business workers would then park free in other downtown spots, or in a 450-space parking garage (also free) coming on-line near city hall in a few weeks, said Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard.
Tentative long-term plans include another parking structure west of Main Street.
Alpharetta community and economic development officials plan to meet with merchants and property owners Dec. 9 to talk about parking and other issues.
