An 80-year-old man died over the weekend after a party boat carrying 53 people capsized on a Texas lake during a thunderstorm, according to reports.
All but one person survived.
The accident happened about 8 p.m. Saturday on Lake Conroe, near Highway 105, about 40 miles north of Houston, NBC affiliate KPRC reported.
The double-decker boat had been on a sunset cruise for about 40 minutes when it began listing to one side.
Witnesses described the waters as rough and choppy, with waves that reached up to 6 feet, according to KPRC.
The boat ultimately tipped over near Regency Point, reports said.
Several children were also aboard the vessel.
Emergency crews from several jurisdictions responded to the scene, including the Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constable’s Office, fire and rescue, EMS and parks department game wardens, the station reported.
Residents who live nearby ran in to help rescue passengers before officials arrived, KPRC reported.
Karl Katzenberger of Montgomery County, Texas, was pronounced dead at a hospital after being pulled from the water, according to KPRC, which cited Kirk McDonnell, a spokesman for the state Parks and Wildlife Department.
CPR was administered to one person and three other passengers were transported to a local hospital, although their conditions were not known, the station reported.
Photos of the wreck show several floatation devices had deployed on one side of the boat.
An investigation into the cause of the accident continues.
