A violent Friday night shooting in Savannah left one person dead and eight other people injured, including a 1-year-old child.

Savannah Police Chief Roy Minter said Saturday the shooting happened in the 200 block of Avery Street around 9 p.m.

A 20-year-old male was killed in the shooting, while the infant was struck near the ankle. Two other victims are in critical condition. Early reports indicated nine people were injured, but Minter clarified that figure on Saturday.

“The incident appears to have happened between two groups of people,” Minter said, adding police recovered at least 60 shell casings. A dark colored, or possibly red, sedan was seen in the area.

Minter said this incident could be connected to a shots-fired incident on Tuesday in the same area. “What’s disturbing is that we could not find any witnesses to that Tuesday incident,” Minter said. “Only a few days later, we have a mass shooting at the same location.”
