Sandy Springs will host an open house Thursday on suggested city code changes for redevelopment of four North End shopping centers.

Last year, the city hired TSW consulting firm to create redevelopment concepts for North Springs Shopping Center, North Ridge Shopping Center, North River Shopping Center and River Springs Shopping Center. An advisory committee of residents and business and community leaders also provided input for the shopping centers and North End Revitalization Plan.

Thursday’s open house meeting will present different mixed-use ideas for the private properties and proposed zoning changes, according to a city statement. The event will be held 5-7 p.m. at Lost Corner Preserve, 7300 Brandon Mill Road.

The event will not include a formal presentation, the statement said, and designs presented for the shopping centers are not proposals by the property owners.

The main part of the North End spans Roswell Road, north of Dalrymple Road to Dunwoody Place. Housing in the area includes million-dollar homes and older apartment communities where some residents have expressed distress in recent years about rising housing costs and fears of displacement when redevelopment occurs. Independent senior living buildings and the Community Assistance Center for people in financial need are also located in the North End.

Local advocates for work force housing such as Sandy Springs Together and the city’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee are in favor of zoning changes that would incentivize developers to build housing that’s affordable for residents of all income levels.

Mayor Rusty Paul said in August that officials don’t want to build more apartment communities but want to attract developers that would build housing types of different price levels.
