In keeping with their rural, pastoral image, Milton is home to about 13 miles of gravel roads. In a recent social media post, the city alerted residents that it was time once again for these unpaved roads to receive a little TLC.

The city performs regular maintenance and grading quarterly in January, April, July and October to ensure these unpaved roads are safe and sustainable. Milton’s public works department will be utilizing rented heavy equipment over the next few weeks to ensure these roadways remain accessible to citizens.

According to a document prepared by the U.S. Department of Public Safety Federal Highway Administration, there are over 1.6 million miles of unpaved roads in the United States, representing about 53% of all roads. The report states, “Good gravel road maintenance or rehabilitation depends on two basic principles: proper use of a motorgrader (or other grading device) and use of good surface gravel.”
