A Gwinnett County home went up in flames Friday evening, causing major damage during an accidental fire, officials said.
A neighbor called 911 to report the fire on the 800 block of Creek Cove Way at about 5:50 p.m. Less than 10 minutes later, crews arrived to see a two-story home with heavy fire showing through the roof, fire officials said. The resident’s sister met firefighters on the front lawn and confirmed the homeowner was returning home.
Crews were able to get inside the structure after the relative opened the front door, but officials said the second floor’s structure was deteriorating due to the intense blaze. Firefighters withdrew from the inside and knocked out the flames by 7:20 p.m. A total of 29 firefighters responded to the incident.
Footage from the scene after efforts to extinguish the blaze had already begun showed a dome of smoke rising into the sky as the fire burned within the home. Parts of the roof appeared to have collapsed.
Authorities were told an HVAC technician had been to the home to service the furnace earlier in the morning, but they have not said if that contributed to the fire. The cause was determined to be electrical and accidental, fire officials confirmed.
