A Marietta animal shelter will be giving away whiskers and meows to trick-or-treaters this weekend.

Best Friends Animal Society, a rescue group with pet shelters across metro Atlanta, will be hosting a cat adopt-a-thon Saturday afternoon.

Shelter workers will be outside the PetSmart in Marietta, located at 1285 Johnson Ferry Road, from noon to 4 p.m. for the Cat-tastic Howl-O-Ween adoption party.

Best Friends Animal Society has about 40 cats and kittens available for adoption at its Marietta location, according to its website.

Saturday’s event will feature a prize wheel with games, giveaways, candy and treats both for humans and animals.

Adoption fees start at $25 and include vaccination, microchipping and spay/neuter services. Any interested pet owners who show up in costume will get a $10 discount off their pet adoption.

Shelters across metro Atlanta saw intakes for cats and dogs rise over the summer months while adoptions and rescues failed to keep pace. That has left many county pounds running short on space to house the animals and pleading for more adoptions.
