A man was killed Friday morning when he darted into a Clayton County road and was hit by a truck, police said.

Authorities shut down Ga. 85 near Rock Hill Road and Garden Walk Boulevard about 7 a.m. to investigate. According to a Clayton County police spokeswoman, the driver who hit the man remained at the scene to speak with officers.

The driver told officers the man stepped into southbound traffic and he tried to avoid hitting him, Officer Halekia Helm said. The pedestrian, whose name was not released, was dead at the scene.

Investigators do not anticipate charges against the driver, Helm said.
