A proposal that would require trash transfer trucks to be thoroughly secured with tarp after leaving a landfill is the subject of public hearing Feb. 2 before the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners.

At the board’s Jan. 5 meeting, District 1 Commissioner Steve West introduced an ordinance amendment that would require commercial trash trucks to be completely covered, even after dumping their loads. Otherwise, trash that gets stuck inside can be loosened by wind and end up in trees and along the road, West said.

“This would force large tractor trailer trucks coming out of the landfill to roll their tarps back up and to cover their trailers,” West said. “A lot of the trash you see up and down the highways is caused by the trucks not covering their trailers after leaving the landfill.”
