The Cherokee County Board of Commissions has advanced a proposal to convert a former fire station into a community center for the Pea Ridge area of north Canton.

Commissioners approved a $25,300 design services agreement with Jericho Design Group for the proposed Charlie Ferguson Community Center in the former Cherokee Fire & Emergency Services Station 9 on Reinhardt College Parkway. The station was retired when a new Station 9 opened nearby.

The community center could house such county services as after-school programs and senior activities, as well as host family reunions, events and other functions, staff said in a report to commissioners. Once improvements are completed, ownership would be transferred to the Charlie Ferguson Community Center Board.

The project would be funded by a 2020 Community Development Block Grant. Information: https://bit.ly/3q0xeQn
