April showers bring May flowers, as has been well established. But what does buckets of late-February rain bring?
In Atlanta, at least, lots of late winter-early spring gardening events. Here’s a quick look at a few to plan for:
- Daffodils are out in a big way and the tulips are on their way at the Atlanta Botanical Garden's third annual "Atlanta Blooms" event. More than a quarter-million bulbs, including hyacinths and crocuses, will make staggered appearances as the show continues through April at the 30-acre Midtown attraction. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays-Sundays. - The Atlanta Orchid Society Show, March 8-10 at the Atlanta Botanical Garden's Day Hall, will put hundreds of orchids on display and on sale. 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. March 8-9, 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. March 10. - The Southeastern Flower Show & Antiques, March 15-17 at Cobb Galleria Centre, will feature the theme "What's Old Is New Again." In its 25th anniversary year, the show will include landscaped gardens; a juried floral design competition; speakers (including Vince Dooley and Walter Reeves); kid's activities; flower arranging, gardening and cooking demonstrations; and shopping at the garden-oriented Marketplace and Bookstore. 9 a.m.-8 p.m. March 15-16, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. March 17. Tickets: $18 advance, $21 door; $17 age 65-up and college students with IDs; $9 students grades 1-12. - The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Decorators' Show House and Gardens, April 20-May 12 at a French-inspired grand chateau in Buckhead, will feature garden design by landscape architect Ed Castro. For the first time, the ASO Decorators' Show House will be included as part of the Atlanta Botanical Garden's Gardens for Connoisseurs tour (and guests to one qualify for discounted admission to the other).
